A phrasal verb is a verb that has two or sometimes three words together. The first word is a verb (e.g. carry) and the words after the verb are prepositions or adverbs (e.g. on, out, across). When these words are put together, the meaning of the verb changes. Let's look at carry as an example. To carry means to hold something with you when you move or go somewhere. To carry on means to continue an action or task.
Phrasal verbs are used all the time in English, so taking the time to learn them will help you to communicate in everyday conversations. Click on a phrasal verb below to find out what it means and see an example of how to use it in a work environment.
