A lovely way to start off a weekend morning is by going to one of Wellington’s fruit and vege markets. The two most popular are the Newtown Market and the Harbourside Market. If you prefer sleeping in on Sundays, the Newtown Market is your best bet, since it runs on Saturdays. It’s held weekly on Mein Street at Newtown School, about a 20-minute bus ride from the CBD, and runs from 7.30 am to 2.00 pm. The market has a vibrant atmosphere and a wide selection of locally-grown fruits and vegetables. There are also plenty of stalls where you can grab baked goods or a snack from a variety of cuisines. New stalls pop up quite often, keeping the market dynamic.
As for the Harbourside Market, it is Wellington’s oldest market. It runs weekly on Sundays from 7.30 am until 2.00 pm and is located right by Te Papa Museum on the Wellington waterfront. It’s a great choice if you’re keen to see views of the harbour as you look around the stalls. You’ll see loads of people grabbing a breakfast or early-lunch snack from one of the stalls and then going to find a nice spot to sit, relax, and soak up the waterfront atmosphere. Just like the Newtown Market, there’s a wide variety of fresh produce, baked goods, coffee, and tasty snacks from different cuisines.
Shopping at the markets means you can do most of your grocery shopping in the fresh, open air, see what’s happening in the community, save money, and support local producers and small businesses.
