Real fruit ice cream is a classic treat during the summer months in New Zealand. It is easier to find in summer, when berries are in season, although some places sell it all year round. It is made in a special machine that blends real fruit with vanilla ice cream or frozen yoghurt and swirls the ice cream into a cup or a cone. Real fruit ice cream machines make the ice cream have a very smooth and creamy texture. Part of the experience is that your ice cream and fruit are blended in front of you when you order it. Some of the usual fruit options are: strawberry, blueberry, raspberry, boysenberry, mixed berry, mango or banana.
If you order one, you’ll need to make a few choices…
If you want vanilla ice cream or frozen yoghurt
Which real fruit you would like to add
If you would like it in a cup or a cone
Here’s how to ask for one: ‘Can I please get a mixed berry real fruit ice cream with yoghurt in a cone?’
These are the kinds of places you will find real fruit ice cream: berry farms, fruit and vege shops, ice cream shops, and at ice cream carts by the beach or at a market. If they have it, there will likely be a sign outside that says ‘Real fruit ice cream’. If you see one of these signs while out for a walk or on a drive, it is worth stopping for one.
